Based loosely on a Cherokee Parable and the teachings of Paul from Romans 7:14-25 and also alluding to the contemporary concept of depression as the Black Dog.
The Cherokee Chief explains to his pupil that there is a terrible fight inside of him between two wolves. One is dark, full of anger, envy, sorrow, regret greed, arrogance, self pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, self doubt and ego.
The other is light, joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, self control, benevolence, empathy, truth and faith.
The same battles lies in all of us.
"Who will win" asks the student?
"The one you feed" replies the Chief.
Romans explains this battle as between spirit and flesh, the law and the heart.
lyrics
There are two dogs fighting inside of me,
One as white as snow, one as black as sin,
And depending on which of those dogs I feed,
Oh the black or white dog will get a hold on me.
I wake up every morning make my resolutions,
Rules I'll follow all my good intentions,
But by the time the clock strikes 3, we'll all I follow is selfish old me
There are 2 dogs...
I never do all the things that I should,
No the things I hate are the things that I do,
Cause my soul is willing but my flesh is weak,
And I will never do all the good that I speak
Cause there are...
I can't do this alone so i'all fill my head,
With the words of the one who was raised from the dead,
I'm gonna feed that white dog on the words that he said,
I'm gonna starve that black dog until he is dead
Cause there are...
